Soccer well-positioned for 2009

Santos and Ajax Cape Town have once more demonstrated the ongoing power shift in South African club football.

By defeating Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs (2-1) and Orlando Pirates (1-0) respectively in their latest league encounters, the Cape-based sides are continuing to level the playing fields and demonstrate that tradition and mass appeal can be overcome. That's good for the local game in the build-up to next year's Confederations Cup and the 2010 World Cup. Certainly, the standard of the Premier Soccer League is a good indicator of how the game is developing with both these tournaments now looming large.

On the national football front, there's also plenty to be optimistic about. After a string of indifferent results (and the loss of yet another national coach), Joel Santana and his new-look Bafana squad are showing signs of real promise. They were desperately unlucky to lose to Nigeria in their final qualifying match for the African Cup of Nations. Since then, they have secured four friendly victories against Cameroon, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea and Malawi. It's early days, of course, Santana but believes his squad will have what it takes to make a serious challenge at next year's "Festival of Champions".

Time and again, Fifa has reminded us that the performance of the local side is pivotal to the success of a World Cup, as demonstrated by France (winners in 1998), South Korea (co-hosts and semi-finalists in 2002) and unfancied Germany, who also made it to the semi-finals two years ago. If Bafana are in the process of starting a late charge for 2010, much will depend on the state of the domestic game and the national squad's performance at the Confederations Cup; but there are signs that things are pointing in the right direction.

Best Countries With Greatest Opportunity For An Unforgettable 2010 World Cup

The top 32 footballing countries will covene at the 2010 World Cup finals to play for the right to be world champions of the sport as the tournament draws nearer. Each of the teams that will be flying to South Africa for the competition will be readying themselves for the challenge ahead and fans can catch World Cup 2010 live using the Internet and broadband technology. With every match at the click of a button for any fan in every location in the world, they will get to enjoy the games involving but not restricted to Spain, Brazil, Italy, Germany, Holland and each of the 32 teams taking part. Even updated news and all the incidents happening behind the scenes can be tracked this way which will be a huge bonanza for fans of football.

This edition of the FIFA World Cup finals will bring together many of previous champions of the competition. England have been hogging the headlines as they have always done leading up to any major football tournament. They have only won it once though compared to Brazil who have topped the charts with five previous trophies. Their calibre will be tested fully with the draw having placed them in the infamous Group of Death where they will need to go up against the likes of Ivory Coast, Portugal and North Korea. If they can come through it unscathed, then the Brazilian would have proven themselves worthy of progress.

Whoever hopes to claim the trophy this time will need to first wrest it from the hands of Italy who were crowned world champions in the 2006 finals. The Italians have been ranked lower in recent years due to the paucity of new talent emerging from their ranks. Many of their current crop are also young and unproven at international level despite their ease in qualifying for South Africa. If manager Marcello Lippi can make their passage through look easy against Slovakia and Paraguay, then more will start to take notice of them again. This will apply equally to France who were just champions in the last decade but have since gone into a decline so startling that they needed a controversial goal to qualify from the playoffs.

With the World Cup 2010 finals kicking off in June, there can only be one agenda on many sports fans' schedule. The tournament will also be staged in Africa for the first time and many eyes will be seeing how the continent prepares for it and how well they will do. If hosts South Africa can put on a show for not just the fans but the whole world to enjoy, then it would be a perfect advertisement for the country and their neighbours. The World Cup finals only come by once every four years and it would be tragic for the tournament to fail under any circumstance.

FIFA completes World Cup media rights sales

FIFA completed its lineup of 2010 World Cup broadcasters ahead of schedule Tuesday by signing a television rights deal for Nigeria.

World soccer's governing body expects to earn $3.2 billion from selling television and marketing rights for the tournament in South Africa.

"We can now focus on delivery of the rights and further developing our relationship with the broadcasters," FIFA secretary-general Jerome Valcke said.

The agreement with the Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria guarantees live coverage on free-to-air television and radio of all 64 games.

Krishna ensures shock Fiji win against New Zealand in World cup qualifier

New Zealand ruined their chances of a perfect record in the Oceania zone World Cup qualifying series with a shock 2-0 defeat to Fiji Wednesday, but still go through to the next stage of qualifying.

New Zealand will play the fifth ranked Asian team next year for a place in the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa but the last Oceania match belonged to Fiji striker Roy Krishna. Fiji had managed just one win from their first five matches in the four-team qualifying round but Krishna struck twice in the second half against New Zealand to ensure the series ended on a high note.

New Zealand won their first five matches, securing top spot in the Oceania qualifying, and with nothing at stake both teams used the match as an opportunity to blood new players. New Zealand's inexperience showed as they were unable to capitalise on a wealth of possession and at least five good shots on goal in the scoreless first spell.

Keeper Glen Moss opened the door for Fiji when he was sent off in the 59th minute for dissent.
Replacement Jacob Spoonley's first action on the field was picking the ball out of the back of the net four minutes later, after Krishna ran into space in the box and hit the ball low and hard to his right.

Fiji had to withstand more pressure from the New Zealanders before Krishna struck again in the 90th minute, taking a cross and deftly working the ball around defender Steven Old to blast home from six metres.

Seasonal Football Kits Changes

Football has changed from a sport into somewhat of a cult and fashion, whether it be the football kits worn by players or what they wear off the pitch is an area of keen interest for some followers. Take for example the case of Romeo Beckham- as if it is not enough that David Beckham is a fashion icon, his son Romeo, of all of eight years of age, has made it into the 26th spot in GQ’s magazine for Britain’s best dressed men. So whether it is off or on the pitch football fashion features as important for many.

Let's take the example of Sheffield Wednesday. For their most recent football kit decision they opened up a vote on kit designs to the fans. The club were apparently grateful for the input of fans whose vote decided on a retro style kit featuring silver shorts.

Spain, fondly known as the Red Fury, and winners of the 2010 World Cup, unveiled new away football shirts late in 2010. The important feature of these is that there is a golden star to commemorate their 2010 World Cup win, which is on the shirts just above the football federation crest. This is a nice way to remind opponents that for the moment they are the World Cup Champions. The base colour of the shirts is white with red and yellow in places.

Man U, Manchester United or some call them the Red Devils, have also chosen a white base colour, changing from black for their away shirts. With the sponsors logo in black and the manufacturers logo in red, these shirts will feature red and black chevron, on the sleeves and also down the back. The back will have an effect where it becomes narrower as it goes down the spine. Fans have shown a pretty mixed reaction to the design. Some even made comments about feeling sympathetic towards the players who had to wear them.

Barcelona who is the Spanish League Champions has gone green with their new home and away kits. Shirts are made from eight recycled plastic bottles, and they have kept their traditional blue and red stripes and yellow collar. Barca fans are mostly positive in their reactions about the kits, although there are a few sniping comments about the manufacturer. The strange thing is that not many fans seem to think that it is important that their team is recycling plastic bottles.

From just a small selection of examples, we can truly see the importance of football kits, shirts and football fashion for football fans.

Common Injuries To Hockey Players

Hockey Player Doll

Everyone knows that hockey can be a rough and sometimes brutal sport to be involved with. There are a lot of injuries that are common to hockey players that are either a part of the game or some can be threatening to one's career. This is why so many hockey players are prone to a lot of injuries to the back, knees and arms and a plethora of other things as well. There are ten injuries that hockey players are prone to and they are:
Lower back problems
Head trauma
Neck strain
Tendonitis
Black eye
Broken teeth
Frostbite
Spinal cord injury
Broken bones

It's these injuries that can resort to ending a player's career which has happened a lot in the NHL a lot of players end up cutting their careers short because of injuries due to repeated injuries to the same place over and over again for a course of years. This can also keep a player in pain for years on end and can escalate to chronic which requires them to be in some kind of physical therapy and pain management. It's not a pleasant thing for many athletes who have career ending injuries because they're constantly in pain that can sometimes be unbearable which can make their lives hard to deal with. Many athletes are also becoming too reliant on medications to fix problems and that too has caused issues. Hockey Player Doll

A lot of the common knee injuries are fixed with shots of cortisone which can cause erosion of the cartilage in the knees which can be serious and result in full or partial knee replacement when it gets to be to the point that tearing begins to set in. This is why a lot of physical and massage therapists can know right away what part of an athlete's body will eventually wear out because of the frequent repetitive moving they do during a game or even the training they do in the off season. The surgeries these athletes get are really the most painful things around they may fix the problem, but they can also cause pain to get worse over time to where it's chronic and persistent and can be bothersome making it difficult to sleep and do normal daily activities in and outside of the home. Many athletes are usually not good at accepting retirement especially due to injuries that can end a career, but many of them will not listen to a doctor when he or she tells them to rest and follow the self care instructions laid out for them so they can get the recuperation in so they can be back on the ice in a shorter amount of time. There's a reason doctors say this and that's so the body can take the time to heal itself from an injury and can allow the body to recuperate naturally without so much pain medication.
